The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has provided an update on ongoing investigations into the fatal road traffic accident that claimed the life of former Cabinet Minister and politician Cyrus Jirongo in December last year.
In a statement, the DCI said the inquiry into the crash, which occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, at the Karai area along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, is still underway and has been “wide-ranging and comprehensive.”
Upon completion, the investigation file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for appropriate action.
Detectives said they have analyzed information from multiple sources and recorded statements from 28 individuals as part of the inquiry.
Among those who have given statements are seven passengers who were travelling in the bus involved in the accident and who voluntarily presented themselves to assist investigators.
The DCI confirmed that National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula also recorded a statement voluntarily during the early stages of the investigation.
Statements were additionally taken from George Khaniri, described as a close friend of the late Jirongo, and his wife, Eunice Chelagat.
According to investigators, the couple visited the accident scene on the day of the incident and helped facilitate the transfer of Jirongo’s remains from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to Lee Funeral Home.
The agency also disclosed the findings of the post-mortem examination conducted on the deceased.
The autopsy established that Jirongo sustained severe crush chest injuries, a broken sternum, and lacerations to the heart, liver, and kidneys. The pathologist concluded that the cause of death was multiple crush injuries resulting from blunt force trauma.
In its update, the DCI cautioned media houses, political leaders, and members of the public against speculation and the dissemination of unverified claims regarding the accident.
“The DCI urges restraint and calls on all parties to refrain from making unsubstantiated statements that may prejudice ongoing investigations, cause unnecessary public anxiety, or unfairly injure the character of individuals who have cooperated with investigators,” the statement said.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to conducting impartial, thorough, and expeditious investigations in strict accordance with the law, adding that any findings will be handled through the established legal process once the inquiry is concluded.
